He behaves as a powerful king should, building a massive hall and handing out treasures to his followers. Hrothgar is a relatively static character, a force of stability in the social realm. Although he is as solidly rooted in the heroic code as Beowulf is, his old age and his experience with both good and ill fortune have caused him to develop a more reflective attitude toward heroism than Beowulf possesses.
Hrothgar, the king of the Danes, symbolizes the elder who possesses the knowledge others need in order to succeed as men, heroes, and kings. Hrothgar passes on much excellent information and advice to Beowulf.
Beowulf fought in many battles and as a result showed his great character to others. Beowulf had many characteristics which helped him to succeed in battle. Unferth saw Beowulf as cocky and vain.
So, while his cockiness was a flaw in the eyes of others, Beowulf saw it as a self promise and used it to his advantage. Hrothgar has already lavished praise and treasure on the hero and claimed him as a son. Why is Hrothgar important? Hrothgar is known as a good king in the Anglo-Saxon period mainly because of his kindness and battle skills. Because of these attributes, many great warriors choose to follow him to help protect his kingdom in times of trouble and despair.
How many years later is it when Beowulf is faced with wanting to kill a dragon? On his return from Heorot, where he killed Grendel and Grendel's mother, Beowulf becomes king of the Geats and rules wisely for fifty years until a slave awakens and angers a dragon by stealing a jeweled cup from its lair.

The mead hall, to Hrothgar, is a symbol of his accomplishment, and he wants to show his fellow warriors how much he appreciates their loyalty to him. During huge feasts in the mead hall, Hrothgar shares all his good fortune in gold and treasures with his warriors for their loyalty to him. However, in time, Hrothgar and his warriors are forced to leave the mead hall. In the poem, Hrothgar and his warriors are forced out of the mead hall by the attack of what is described as a monster from hell.
Grendel attacks the Danes for over twelve years and forces Hrothgar and his warriors to flee from his mead hall. Hrothgar is very thankful and names Beowulf the king of the geats. Hrothgar is a rewarding King that understands his people and makes sure all his men get enough to drink and women to look at and please them.
And he drank it down like the warlord he was, with festive cheer. This quote shows thats Hrothgar is truly a great king and does for his people. I think that Hrothgar is a good king throughout t he whole book. He knows how to take control and lead his people in an efficient way, but he also knows when to ask for help. He knew, once again, to go to Beowulf. Another example of Hrothgar being a good king is when he tried to give Beowulf advice about how to be a good king in the future.
He was trying to help Beowulf become a successful king, like himself. He knew the right way to be a king. He knew to tell Beowulf that when a warrior becomes a king, they can no longer be the hero. I think that Hrothgar is a very smart man whom led his kingdom very well. This was wrong because Hrothgar had sons of his own that, according to the way their society worked, should be the ones to get the thrown.
