Or is it a lot of healing from druids and DPS zerg? Never done one I have played a tank in most games and really missing it currently. Fractals not so much. Riads depend on the boss. Bosses like vg and gors agro to the person with the highest toughness, bosses like sloth assigns agro to a random person and changes it periodically, cairn agros to the person furthest away from it. There really is not even a "top 2". The go-to Raid Tank is Chronomancer or nothing Except a few bosses that want a Kiter instead , but not for the reason you might think.
Basically, Tanking in Raids is determined by different factors and for a few of those, the players can choose their own tank other bosses uses different Aggro mechanics, such as Distance or Random Rotation. These bosses are the ones that typically Aggro on the highest Toughness, so you simply kit out any profession in high Toughness gear and tank away.
And when you can do this, the profession of choice is always Chronomancer, because:. It struggles to even pull a third or a fourth of dedicated DPS slots' weight in terms of raw damage. As such, if you're gonna have a Chrono, it's not for DPS. This ability can evade just about -everything- in the game with a few exceptions, which you'll soon learn after getting into raids. With these 3 points in mind, you can see how there's basically no point in taking a Chrono along for the ride without making them your tank Unless you have 2 of them, but even then they're just there for their support and utility.
I'm out of the meta, so take it with a grain of salt. For a time Chrono-tanks were a thing in raids, probably not anymore, too much time since then. Now probably Firebrand is the tankiest spec. I might very well be wrong, but I think your options are very limited nowadays.
Chrono-Tanks are still the trusted go-to choice for your average pick up group. Doesn't mean it's the most optimal voice for every encounter especially if you run full minstrel but with it's plethora of channeled blocks, evades and invulnerabilities, it is definitely tankier than a Firebrand, who can only block with aegis.
Most encounters can be tanked by any profession tho by timing dodge rolls except Thief, whose only universally usable builds are selfish DPS that force or restrict movement, and some even require to flank or lose out majorly , but there are responsibilities the community likes to have the Chronomancer deal with anyways mainly focus pulls, but also some portal skips.
But most importantly, due to how the LFG tool works, it has become mandatory for the tank to bring quickness, already limiting the choices to Chrono, FB and newly Scrapper. And while Scrapper has the strongest passive bulk and Firebrand strongest boon output among them, Chrono's ability to be straight up invincible for 10 seconds or more, it remains the safest choice to not get yourself killed while being as stationary as possible.
So, if a player has only one character geared for tanking, it is usually the Chrono. And few feel like optimizing to prepare multiple characters for tanking. As a result, commanders basically have to actively avoid searching for a Chrono-Tank to get something else should they want to.
Well tanks make sense only in raids and i am not sure if you are anywhere near close that content or ever gonna bother with it. In general wherever else you play there isnt a way to let you take aggro. So tank professions dont exist. What exists is dps and supports. If you want to play support which might feel like tanking in a way, guardian is probably the best core class option and then from HoT elite specs it would be scrapper, tempest, herald, chronomancer. In raids where tanks exist there still isnt a specific spec necessarily to tank, you can use whatever you want as long as you build it the correct way.
Which would be chrono, firebrand, scrapper and in the future catalyst eod elementalist elite spec. Real tanks like in other MMOrpgs doesnt exist. But for tanking in raids for example , there are some criteria a tank should fulfill. But this doesnt mean others cant tank.
Revenants can tank very good aswell ,due to having incredibly selfsustain and high support or damage. Never seen a hsc tank but yea fbs and chronos are the typical choices for quickness. Not dying easily also helps with evades, blocks distortion, aegis but to be honest you also have 2 healers on top of it and 1 will always stay with the tank to keep him alive.
That is why in experienced groups the chrono takes only 5 toughness for example. I tank a lot of encounters as healscourge for my group since we don't have a chrono. Literally all I do is change my weapon stats to minstrel so the mob looks at me. Scourge is so stupidly sturdy naturally it makes it easy. I've tanked keep construct as comdi scourge too and even that went fine. Not saying it cant tank, you can tank on any class. But pugs will never accept you without quickness or some other boon that you can provide.
The typical is qtank. Of course in your own group you can arrange whatever you want although even statics still go with the same thing afaik. I support hscg tank because I like variants to the team comp, but just as a fyi KC is barely touching you and literally anything should be able to tank it. I suppose that is ultimately my question about what constitutes a tank for GW2 because I plan on doing end game content and was curious what class I should learn best to do those things.
The Necro tank was something that interested me so I'll look into that. I run Chrono because it can hard carry less experienced players. I've got clones all over the place running interference My brother quickly learnt that the Focus 4 Blue Line on the ground means all the mobs are about to be pulled onto it, he happily stands on it and Warrior Spins-to-Win till everything is dead.
Chrono also has Portals for getting your partner to difficult to reach places. This should never be underestimated!! Chronotank is used most often. For fractals and strikes, there's no real tanking, but hfb heal firebrand is taken basically everywhere and protects others with aegis and heals. If you're interested in tanking on scrapper, I can give your contact information to my friend, although he's not really playing atm. Edit: if you and your wife are on EU server, then you can hmu for inv to the guild - we do raids quite a lot, but we also do strikes and fractals, so yeah.
If you aim for raids then your options are limited. The "any class can tank" doesn't mean groups will accept you on anything. For example necro cant tank because it doesnt provide any boons to your squad. The goal is to combine tanking with support so you have to go with specific specs to tank there in most cases. Beginner groups might not care that much but after you progress even a little it will be that way. Trailblazer's Scourge is a very solid choice for tanking most encounters given you're going to have barrier generation, well over 20k HP, and around 2k toughness.
Trailblazer's is a great tanking prefix, and on classes like Scourge you lose very little damage by running it. On most encounters making a scourge tank is going to result in higher group DPS than running Chrono tank. While this might be true, can't really comment as I've never tried.
You are bound to run into issues on encounters like deimos where hard blocks are required. Sure you could use a firebrand to make up for it but now you are investing a lot into making that scourge tank work.
You don't need a block to tank Deimos. On normal mode the tank can and should go into the ward with the rest of the group. What problem would that create? Deimos is static during mind crush, so you can run into bubble, and back to him before he can move again. Black drop is also not on the tank, so tank going into bubble is not affecting that either. Yea true, also weaver can tank and end up in much higher dps than the chronos in pugs. Unless you have a static. I get that it is a joke, but you will never die on weaver or tempest if you choose the right gear celestial, trailbrazers and traits.
I can second this! With celestial stats, you have enough tankiness to survive basically any hit, enough immunity frames to ignore any hits you can't tank, and enough healing to recover quickly enough!
Water 2, swap earth, earth 2, water 5 is usually a full heal, a lot of dodge uptime, which puts you in perfect position to swap fire, fire 2, earth 4, earth 5, dual 3, primordial stance for some pretty decent damage.
Just wanted to point out that Firebrand has access to an actual Taunt condition, which can make it pull aggro like a traditional tank when fighting groups of mobs. It's an extremely uncommon condition to have. Heal-Firebrand also has access to a bunch of blocks through aegis, projectile defense, condition clears, stability, and healing that all adds up to make you super sustainable in any fight.
Plus you can taunt, or use tome 1 to pull enemies together. All this while providing support boons and heals to others. It's an incredibly effective support class that can effectively tank in the traditional sense given Taunt.
The enemies encounter this player, but since there is a wall on one side, they do not even try to get around, and so, they change targets and focus their attacks on the player standing in front of them.
It is called "cornerblocking" because it works best when aggro'ing an enemy or group of enemies around a corner. This strategy is generally unsuccessful in PvP, as experienced human players will focused on their primary target, san tactically ignoring better, weaker targets. Also, a human is obviously capable of navigating their character around most obstacles, while enemy AI has more problems with this. A human would also know when to flee or, in circumstances where it would prove more advantageous, kite if their health is getting dangerously low while, in general, enemy AI does not.
There are many ways to tank. The classic tanks are Warrior characters, thanks to their very high Armor Rating , using skills that help to mitigate damage or to block attacks. However, there are many different ways to reach the same goal, so common tank builds use one of the following:.
A perma tank or SF tank utilizes a permanent Shadow Form to gain immunity to harmful spells. It has lower energy costs than a Terra tank, but misses the multitude of powerful defensive enchantments of Earth Magic. Primary assassins have more freedom of choice see Perma Shadow Form - Setup.
The effects of any equipment which benefits from enchantments, such as Blessed Insignia or Sheltered by Faith can be reliably maintained. To keep Shadowform permanently active, skills such as Deadly Paradox or consumables that reduce recharge time are needed.
Since Shadow Form only marginally protects from attacks by itself, it is often combined with Shroud of Distress for blocking and additional damage reduction. Additional defensive skills may include healing, higher block chances, extra armor, or more damage reduction, depending on enemy skills. Stance tank is a less common type of PvE tank build which heavily - as the name implies - relies on stances to survive.
Stance tanks are mostly primary Warriors or Rangers and in case of the latter secondary warriors. Stance tank builds are meant to draw, hold and survive dangerous groups of physical attackers and damage dealers , while either inflicting damage through their weapons or punishment skills.
Mostly, they are used to solo farm melee attackers. Stance tanks usually rely on equipment which benefit from being in a stance, such as shields of Endurance.
